On the 16th November 2014 our newly refurbished worship space was celebrated via our re-dedication event. The event gave everyone opportunity to celebrate the hard work and dedication that went in to create the flexible, warm and welcoming space. Christmas morning 2014 Christmas eve 2014 Our Christmas 2014 morning service at Hillsborough, included the dedication of our beautiful new sanctuary furniture, which arrived just before Christmas eve.
This completes the transformation of the church space into a modern multi-purpose open space, for worship and other activities. (The colour of the wall in reality matches the colour of the carpet, honestly!) Trinity has always had a collection of items of furniture from various gifts and closures over the years, so the final element in the transformation of the church space was to commission a matching set of furniture. We had it made in Thirsk in Yorkshire, to our own designs, in oak, and so it will be the only one of its kind. We will be able to use the two former lecterns in other places in the building. Four members of the congregation each read a Christmas reading and said a prayer, specifically about one of the items of furniture: · Sheila for the Trinity leaders prayed about our communion around the table and into the neighbourhood; · Ellen for the Trinity young people stood at the font and read and prayed about the children of the future and our welcome to them; · Liz for the Carlton Road congregation stood at the lectern and read and prayed about lessons from the bible and other wise writings that we will hear from the lectern, and · Doreen for the Birley Carr congregation stood at the preaching desk and read and prayed that the Word will be spoken from this desk, and we might hear and live the Word in our own lives. It was a happy and moving service, which drew together the elements of our lives together. We ended with a blazing rendition of “Come and join the celebrations!” We stood in a circle round the new font, whose oak and steel represent the life and history of Sheffield, and shared the blessing with each other, and then joined in the photo. It feels like we have now completed stage one of the transformation of our church into the 21st century. On 25th October2014, Hillsborough Trinity hosted the S6YN (Ecumenical Youth Network run by the Churches in the S6 Area) Light Party. We played games, carved positive pumpkins, had glow in the dark worship, thought about being light and saints in the world and ate lots of tasty soup!
Great changes afoot at Hillsborough Trinity Methodist ChurchMajor changes are happening at Hillsborough Trinity. After a period of reflection and consultation, and a lot of planning and detailed work, a new church for a modern age is taking shape inside this fine old landmark building.
New Church and Community worker The church is advertising a new post, from September for a church and community worker. The new person will carry on and develop the wonderful work done by Yannie Duveen who went to other activities in the summer. The post is a permanent full-time post and will be working with the activities at Trinity, and in the community. There is an advert for the post on the church website. New worship area The inside of the church is being completely changed round. Everyone loved the hundred year old wooden pews, but they were fixed and meant it was not possible to do anything other than sit in rows. Now they have been removed and are being recycled. In their place a new level carpeted floor, with environmentally friendly under-floor heating, is creating a wonderful open space which will suit many church and community activities. There will be a new coffee servery, and a glazed lobby where the toddler groups can have wet play, while their other activities can take place in the warm carpeted area. New annexe In the summer the church will start building the new annex for which planning approval has been obtained. This will provide an accessible entrance to the church and hall, modern toilets, a church office and other facilities. New users The church is delighted that as part of its close working over the last year with the United Reformed Church at Carlton Road, which has decided to close in July this year, some of the church and community activities will relocate into the re-furbished Trinity. These will include the Scout troop, with three age groups, the Kool Kids pre and after school service, the Kumon maths and literacy supplementary class, and two toddler groups which will share with the existing toddler group. Full details will be available in due course on the church website. The assistant minister, Rev Ian Lucraft said: “Trinity is taking a huge step forward in being open and available and welcoming for the whole community, and all the hard work will be rewarded when the building work is finished.” Please call Ian Lucraft for further information, comment or photos Church Community Worker
An exciting and well-funded opportunity to work in a developing church and community environment. This is a full-time permanent post, starting in Autumn 2014. Trinity is a busy church in the middle of a lively urban environment. It already has youth and community activities well established; toddlers, community café, uniformed organisations. In the Autumn of 2014 it will also become the home for other community groups re-locating to Trinity from their present places: scouts, pre-school and after school services, more toddlers, supplementary school for maths and English, and a project for adults with serious learning difficulties. A major re-development programme is under way to enable these activities to move in. The post-holder will act as the community champion at Trinity, explore how the church can serve the community and promote new ventures where a need is agreed. This post is an opportunity to develop the work of the existing and new organisations, assist their integration, and find ways to enable engagement with the life of the church. The post-holder is not expected to run any or all of these activities, but to facilitate their effective work, support them in the quality development of their activities, support volunteers and manage communications among them and with the wider community. For a pack about the post (including an application form), please apply to Sheila Mappin, sheila001@blueyonder.co.uk To discuss the post, please phone either Rev Katie Leonowicz, on 0114 229 4707, or Rev Ian Lucraft on 0114 234 7153. Closing date for applications will be 31 July 2014. We plan to interview in the week commencing Tuesday 26 August. We plan to appoint for a start in September/October 2014 to be agreed. Pride and fun were the order of the evening at the annual awards evening on 27 July at Trinity.
Lots of awards were given out by the Captain, James Wilkinson, and families and church members enjoyed watching the parade. James also announced that for work reasons he is stepping down from being the captain, though he is going to remain an active officer with the company. The church expresses it sincere thanks to James for all the effort he has put in. Allison Oakes is going to step up to be the captain, once the Church Council has approved the recommendation, and we are delighted that she will bring her own blend of leadership to this new role. We are looking for an Organist!
After many years loyal service, Harry Pearson, well into his 80’s, and known and loved by many who have listened to his playing, or been taught or advised by him, has decided to step down from being the regular organist at Trinity. While we regret this, we fully understand and support his decision. So now we are looking for someone who would be interested to play our quality Phoenix concert organ on a regular basis on Sundays. We have a morning service every Sunday and an evening service once a month. Choir practice is once a week. (most weeks) It may be that you could only play during term-time, perhaps, and we would cover the other weeks through other arrangements with people we know. There is an honorarium paid to the organist. If anyone is interested, please speak to one of the ministers, or one of the members of the church. |
