Becoming a (more) child-friendly church

We welcome all children and their families to our services and weekly activities. Because this is so important to us, we have recently begun a journey to examine how well we provide worship and activities for children, be honest with ourselves about what we could improve, and make a positive statement that we want to make sure that all children and their families will find a warm, happy and creative welcome; one in which they can explore the love of God and the life of Jesus in ways that are relevant to them.

So we have signed up to be assessed and recognised as a ‘Child-friendly Church’.  To do this we have to review our activities, our buildings, our welcome and processes, and work at improving them.  We have set ourselves 18 months to go through the whole process, including, we hope, the evaluation and recognition.

We have already begun, with a new ‘children’s play space’ in church itself, with carpet, kid’s table and chairs, toys and activities, so that parents can bring younger children with them and know that there is somewhere the children will be safe and occupied during the service.  And we have re-vamped two dusty old rooms into bright new activity rooms for the Junior Church to feel at home.

So if you have any ideas for how we could improve our welcome and activities for children please let us know, either by using the feedback form on this website, or speaking with one of the activity leaders.

You might want to read the recent report which we have written after the first meeting we held of all the activity leaders to kick off the journey.
